A year and a half ago, I noticed my sister, Melissa, posting fashion outfits on facebook and her blog. After asking her where she was getting these, and how she was able to put them together, she pointed me to the online "community" called Polyvore. The rest is an obsessive history!! (My polyvore "name" is Leegal57, by the way.)
I have joined a group of thousands of people all over the world, who enjoy creating "sets" from not only the items provided by polyvore, but with items they have uploaded to polyvore themselves. I use Pinterest as a wonderful supplier of background photographs for my sets, but I take care not to "clip" them to polyvore until I'm ready to use them. Once you "clip" (upload) something to polyvore, it becomes one of the universal polyvore items which anyone can use. Many complaints are made about people "stealing" other people's items, when in fact they are available to anyone on polyvore.
You are able to save items in categories, and use them later to put together a set of fashion, art, interior design, or whatever you choose. The ability to create is endless! People create groups, and have contests with themes for the sets. I am a moderator of a group that is called Amazing Outfits, in which only the fashion items are allowed, no photographs or texts. Contests are a great inspiration for ideas for sets, and winning or placing in them among hundreds of entries is always a thrill! I have actually won real prizes in two contests... a beautiful wooden bead bracelet and a bottle of Marula dry skin oil, both from the Leakey Collection, which is an organization that sells handmade jewellery made by ladies from the Serengeti in Africa.
The great side benefit of joining polyvore and feeding my creative outlet is that I have met some fantastic women around the world, and got to know a small group of them really well. We get together on facebook and keep in touch on an almost daily basis. One of the ladies I've met and got to know well actually lives about an hour and a half drive from me. It would be fun to get together in person! There are actual "meet-ups" arranged by polyvore members in different parts of the world. There was a meet up in New York last year, but I was busy moving, so couldn't even contemplate attending.
If you're looking for a creative outlet that is fun and easy to use, and to encounter incredible talent from around the world (some of the art sets and interior design sets that people put together are just amazing!), give polyvore.com a try. Unlike Pinterest, where you just "pin" photographs onto your boards, polyvore lets you make new creations with millions of possible items and photographs.
I've been posting a few of my favourite sets on my blog. Below you will see some of my favourite summer sets. If you click on the separate items under the photo, you will be taken to the polyvore page where you can see the details of the item, including its price, and where to order it from if you want to buy it. That's the main drive of polyvore.... selling fashion items! The millions of sets created by its members actually promote those items for them. I've been approached to do sets for fashion designers, but I have declined so far, as I don't want my creative hobby to turn into another job! Maybe if I ever retire from practising law, I'll think about it!!
